Be careful saying you don’t use social media or soon you’ll have a wholly off-topic sub-thread about whether or not HN is social media too, even though we’ve all read the same tired arguments from both sides about a billion times in other threads.

You're right, and if someone wants to say I have social media because of this forum that's totally fine. I just mean I don't use any of the major social media platforms, well, except LinkedIn. And I just haven't gotten over the hump yet on deleting that one too.

If even experts in the field don’t know all of the limitations then it’s even more important to stress that relying on the output of an LLM is a poor choice without additional checking and verification.

Even with calculators, I was taught that you should double check by hand sometimes to make sure you got it right.

So then it’s not really any lack of polish or technical debt, just user error.

hacker news is not such a loftier place that I treat it much differently than instant messaging. but even still, there are plenty of reasons why someone might write how they do. i promise you that i am not trying to be manipulative or status seeking, i just have auto capitalization turned off and I don’t give two shits if weirdos like you don’t like it.

nothing personal kid

You wrote all that to some weirdo you don't give 2 shits? Even copied their closing quote? Hmm

Company pays for company’s tokens, so company’s problem, not mine. I am happy to skill up and avoid overusing tokens for my personal sub, but if it’s getting results then I couldn’t care less how much my employer has to pay for it. They’re begging me to use it in the first place anyway.

When I did it two months ago it took them an hour. Be generous and say they’re backed up and sometimes it takes two hours. Is that too long to be without your phone?

That's assuming you live near a store.

> So I never see any ads

> helps me skip in-content ads

So you get ads still! Whether or not they are from YouTube or the video creator is irrelevant. I thought paying was supposed to supplant needing to advertise to me during the actual video.

Alas, tubers feel the need to add sponsorships these days through either greed or reduced google revenue. Premiums "skip frequently skipped section" is about as easy as it can be to skip over them without blocking them entirely, short of using sponsorblock.

I'm not sure where the legality lies with them being able to skip it automatically if you're a premium user, I'd imagine their uploaders wouldn't be happy though.

Which proves that if they can, they will. So there’s no reason to give them more ways to do it.

The reason is that it increases traffic safety.

It's even possible to set the cameras up in such a way that they only store data when a traffic violation occurs. That would address the surveillance issue.

I have a strong sense that the primary objection people have to red light cameras is that they don't like getting caught running red lights, and that the surveillance argument is a rationalization, not the real objection.

Automated traffic law enforcement is surveillance. The fact it's limited in scope and functionality doesn't matter. It's still surveillance.

All surveillance increases safety. The cost is freedom.

Do you trust humans with the ability to judge the situation and the freedom to decide to run a red light if they think it's safe? Or do you surveil every intersection and punish all infractions regardless of conditions or the existence of actual victims?

For people like me, it's a matter of basic human dignity. I want to be a human with the capacity for judgement and the power to act on it. I want to decide for myself. I want to live in a society that recognizes this. I won't sacrifice this dignity in the name of safety.

> Do you trust humans with the ability to judge the situation and the freedom to decide to run a red light if they think it's safe?

Absolutely not.

> For people like me, it's a matter of basic human dignity. I want to be a human with the capacity for judgement and the power to act on it.

Your human dignity does not require you to be able to run red lights when you think it's okay.

This is libertarian ideology taken to the extreme.

This does work with the screen on. But at least for me Vinegar background audio while locked hasn’t worked for the past several weeks. Once you lock it no longer recognizes there’s any media to play.

It has a lot of issues and sometimes it seems like there are two copies of the video – the one I’ve backgrounded and the one on the main page. So if I lock my phone it’ll go back to the part of the video the last time the phone was locked or start at 0:00. This is definitely annoying but if I fiddle with it enough I can get it to work okay-ish.

Still works for me. I still get the media overlay that tells me what is playing and elapsed/remaining time, but the actual controls do nothing (play/pause, rewind/forward).

Sometimes I get double audio; usually a refresh of the page fixes it.

My company’s self hosted gitlab achieves this all the time.
